Meet Jess Throlson . . .

On March 20, I was installed (3 times!) as the new youth and family director. As part of this service, members of the search committee, the council, and youth of all ages were invited to come forward and lay hands on me as the congregation prayed for the future of this ministry at Gloria Dei. After the prayer, I stood up and turned around to see the amazing mix of people attached to those hands. This experience has left me wondering how many hands have affected faith at Gloria Dei.

The truth is, none of us are on this faith journey alone. For each of us, there have been “hands” along the way to guide, encourage, console, and applaud. Hebrews 12:1 says, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” What incredible words! Who is part of your “cloud”?

Study after study has shown that youth need at least five people of vital faith in their lives in order for them to carry their faith into adulthood. Mom and dad are numbers one and two on that list. Surprisingly, pastor comes in as 6 and youth directors as 7. Positions 3-5 are usually filled by family friends, aunts and uncles, neighbors, or church goers.

Who are people who have made an impact on your faith? In my life I have been blessed by a multitude of “hands” that have an impact on my faith journey. My parents taught me the basics of faith and encouraged me to participate in a faith community. As I look back at my faith journey, there have been a number of people who have their fingerprints on my faith—most of them through congregations that I have been a part of. What always surprises me is that the things that touch my faith can range from a deep, personal conversation about beliefs to a simple hello.

It doesn’t take much to influence the faith of a youth. Call them by name. Ask them about something they are involved in. Invite them to church. Engage. Listen. Encourage. Faith is a journey that cannot be done alone. I want to challenge you to connect with a youth in their faith journey and watch how your faith is enriched through them.
